Sally Levengood is a public health nurse for the Fairbanks North Star Borough. For a number of years, she has been involved in making a community a better place to live, especially for children

As well as being a nurse, Sally is a commissioner on the Early Childhood Development Commission. The project is exploring different ways to improve the quality of life for the community, and provide opportunities for people here to live healthier and happier lives.

Recently she helped set up a survey of Fairbanks families, trying to gauge their use of, and potential interest in, local services for childrens' health and recreation. Apparently the number one suggestion by local families with young children, by an overwhelming degree, is in more places for children to play together indoors.

The suggestion is not something new, but it was surprising just how many people supported it, and how vocal they were about what a difference it would make. Sally also introduced to a number of other services that families can utilize; for health, nutrition, recreation and more. Included in this is the Best Beginnings programs, which is really a great service, which you can learn more about at the website that Sally helped to establish.

The website, fairbanksfamilies.org, has a plethora of valuable information for families in Fairbanks, and strongly recommended that we take a look at it. Perhaps the most popular feature is the calendar for upcoming family-related events, which is truly a great thing to help busy people keep their children active and socially engaged in the community.
